This Surabaya-born fashion designer has come a long way from his Jawa Timur roots. Easily the most celebrated fashion name in his homeland, Biyan (or Biyan Wanaatmadja) has made his mark around the globe too.
He heads three labels: BIYAN FOR WOMEN (founded in 1984) which was followed closely by STUDIO 133 BIYAN in 1985. More than a decade later in 1999, the Indonesian designer went younger with a more mainstream urban streatwear label called (X)S. M. L. BIYAN BRIDE then came into being in 2005, completing the designer’s conquest of all womenswear categories: main line, diffusion or second line, fast fashion and bridal.
So what puts the unstoppable fashion force of Biyan ahead of all the competition? His aesthetics is essentially romantic, classic and sophisticated, with an emphasis on juxtaposing fabric, texture, colour and form within hyper-romantic silhouettes featuring taut tailoring.
Of course, as with most Southeast Asian designers, embellishment is key and Biyan’s designs showcase exquisite embroidery and beading on forms boasting expert craftsmanship and often original silk prints.
Retail-wise, the various lines of Biyan is stocked at the most sought-after brick-and-mortar fashion stores around the world like Joyce Hong Kong, Club 21 Thailand, Saks Fifth Avenue Bahrain and Le Bon Marche Paris. The designer’s main line is stocked on e-commerce site Net-a-porter while second line STUDIO 133 BIYAN is sold at Malaysia’s very own online fashion store, FashionValet.
